New Mexico, August 2003, II
the storm instead calls you: making a reverberent nexus locus of the headland where you stand, half-hollowed, pavement stones, cacti echoing with song; instead of being that half-voiced throw becomes a dream inside your breast, keelstone altarstone chamber for its threatening music. hummingbirds, fleeting and beautiful as creatures of routine; returning to the same wingbeat and treasure identical. a circle of stones, half-made, half-grown; figments of local bedrock ground to dust then raised on edge nights steady, lightened consolations; it beats, bird-heart, stones bright exhalation, and you fill with it; heron heart has woven a tapestry of awakening. never pause to wonder; the stranger on the path is yourself, that you meet between stone and stone.
