Grace Cathedral

One of my favorite pilgrimage sites in the Bay Area, I visit Grace Cathedral regularly, to walk the Labyrinnth, to just sit and look at the light and listen to the silence, to je be present.

The images in this section are from January 2004. Below are images from May 2002.

Walking the Labyrinth at Grace Cathedral, 2002

Grace Cathedral, high atop Nob Hill, is a central nexus for the revival of Labyrinth-walking as a meditative and spiritual practice. The Cathedral is very ecumenical, and home to an AIDS Memorial Chapel that welcomes people of all faiths and denominations. In the Chapel are hung several panels of the AIDS Quilt, and a stunning altarpiece in the form of a Medieval folding altar with imagery in bronze by the late artist Keith Haring.

Visiting the Cathedral was a pilgrimage of sorts for me, as I have been walking the Labyrinth for many years. To visit and walk this Labyrinth (modelled on the one at Chartres Cathedral in France) was the fulfillment of a dream. The cathedral organist was rehearsing that afternoon, as well, so the room was filled with rich music, including variations on Veni, Creator Spiritus.
